Career Decision-Making

How people make decisions related to their major in college, their occupation, their long-term career path, and retirement represents an important area of vocational psychology theory and practice. Various theories have been advanced to account for career decision-making. Peterson, Sampson, Reardon, and Lenz (1996, p. 426) note these theories and discuss in depth the application of cognitive information processing (CIP) theory to career decision-making. The services at the career center at Florida State University is modeled on their CIP theory (see Peterson, Sampson, & Reardon, 1991).
