Compatibility

An important construct in Gottfredson's (1996) theory of circumscription and compromise, compatibility refers to the degree to which individuals view an occupation as being suitable for them. Presumably, a sense of compatibility arises from perceiving a minimum distance between the image of an occupation (in a cognitive map of occupations) and their image of themselves (projected into the same map). Thus, compatibility is similar to the concepts of congruence (Holland, 1997), correspondence (Dawis, 1996), and person-environment fit.
