Cognitive Map of Occupations

A central feature of Gottfredson's (1996) theory of circumscription and compromise, individuals typically organize their images of occupations into a "meaningful, shared" (Gottfredson, p. 184) cognitive map of occupations. Adults appear to be able to organize this map according to some common dimensions, including occupational prestige, sex-type of the occupation (i.e., masculinity-femininity), and field of work.
