Career Counseling Services
from Andrew D. Carson, M.S., Ph.D.
resume | full CV

I offer individual career counseling (which can include job search assistance) in both brief and extended formats. In my first session with a client, I work with the client to determine whether the work will be brief or extended.

Brief career counseling can include between 1 and 3 sessions focusing on a specific career adjustment or job search problem, such as choosing an appropriate college major or identifying an occupation or job that fit one's interests and abilities. Such counseling often includes completion of an assessment battery (see a discussion of assessment services).

Extended career counseling can include any number of sessions to support the client's ongoing career development or job search needs. Six to 12 sessions is a typical number.

I charge $90 per hour for individual counseling services, payable at the end of each session.

Overview of Brief Career Counseling

Goal: Focus on specific career adjustment or job search problem and work to solve it or provide the client with the means to solve it on his or her own.

Examples of problems addressed: Choosing appropriate college major, identifying an occupation or job that fit ones interests and abilities.

Required assessment: None. Assessment services are optional, and will only be offered if assessment would help to solve the problem.

Cost: $90 per hour, payable at the end of each session.

Overview of Extended Career Counseling

Goal: Support the client's ongoing career development or job search needs. At times, a client knows only that they are having career difficulties--perhaps a whole range of difficulties. At times these career difficulties are not unconnected to non-work parts of the client's life. An extended exploration of the client's career situation may be warranted. Six to 12 sessions is a typical number of sessions for such work.

Examples of problems addressed: Extended difficulties in identifying a suitable undergraduate major, anticipated career change in adulthood but without a specific career direction determined, successful occupational performance coupled with loss of interest in and satisfaction derived from the work, difficulties in sustaining motivation for job search after losing one's job.

Required assessment: None. Assessment services are optional, and will only be offered if assessment would help to solve the problem.

Cost: $90 per hour, payable at the end of each session.

Sharing of information with third parties. I work to maintain an ethical and legal practice. I can coordinate work with other mental health and counseling professionals. Clients should let me know during or before the first session if they are working with someone else, such as a therapist or career counselor. I will work the client within the limits imposed by the law to share information at the client's request to the desired parties. In the case of clients who are minors, parental involvement will be required as well.
